I sat in silence for a moment, looking at Zeus who lay curled on the floor at my feet.
"Can it be cured or will it get worse? What can we do?”
“Well, you have a few options,” he replied.
“There's surgery of course, as well as anti inflammatories to manage the pain, but the option many go with at this stage would be Euthenasia, given the amount of pain involved”
I told Dr. Isaacson that I’d have to go home to think it over.
(Mostly so I wouldn't throw up all over his exam room)...
I gripped the steering wheel tightly as I drove back… Knowing that there was no way I could ever accept ANY of these options as a solution for my beloved Zeus.
Looking in the rearview mirror, my heart broke all over again as I spotted Luna licking Zeus's ankle joint in some loving attempt to make him feel better.
Her futile actions only going to prove the loyalty and love that dogs are famous for, and at the same time inspiring me to try and match that loyalty to the best of my ability.
Over the next week, things got worse in a hurry...
Zeus had “retired” to the first floor kitchen, and eventually stopped walking altogether.
Whenever he tried, the howls were enough to give me nightmares. (Which they absolutely did)...
